Cycling Challenge:Day 3 of A-Z Challenge

“Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”

The doorbell was ringing uninterruptedly. I opened the door and saw six of my new school classmates on their bicycles. I smiled and asked how they come to know that I live here. The tallest among them said winking, we have links. I gestured them to come inside but they refused saying we have come here to take you with us. Bring your bicycle and join us.

I started looking here and there awkwardly.

The one with beautiful face asked with concern “Don’t you have a bicycle”? If not, you can sit behind me.

Me: No, no, no..I have one, a big one.

Another girl with big spectacle, Oh your mother won’t allow you??

Me: Nah! That’s not the problem.

They (all together): So what’s the problem?

Me (hesitantly): I don’t know how to ride a bicycle.

All of them were astounded but kept mum. But the shortest among them said sneering “You are so tall and twelve years old and you don’t know how to ride a bicycle, such a shame”

Nothing else could hurt a twelve-year-old than being jerked as insufficient in front of others. It made me angry not on the boy but on myself that I was incompetent.

I knew thinking won’t help, action would. I could not take the big bicycle on my own and go on road. I asked my brother to teach me, he procrastinated it saying on Sunday sissy.

But I wanted to learn it before I meet that gang of my classmates again.  And as it’s said “When there is a will, there is a way”.

Then suddenly it occurred to me, that there is one person who can help me. I ran upstairs to our landlord’s house. Their younger daughter was a year older to me and had become my friend in short time. I called her out and explained her my situation. She took my hand and we went downstairs. She cleaned my bicycle with old cloth, lying on floor. She checked air in its tube and dragged the cycle out on road. She helped me in sitting on the seat and asked me to hold the handle while she held my cycle from behind. She kept walking with me for 5 minutes and then when she noticed that, I was balancing it well, she left the support. I kept riding for next ten minutes without realizing that she was not behind me.

That’s how I took up my first childhood challenge and overcame it.

I am always thankful to this friend of mine who became my saving angel in time of crisis.

Thank you Anshu di for teaching me how to ride bicycle ❤

PS :Tell me when was the last time you took up some one’s challenge and came out with flying colours?

This my attempt for the Third day of the A-Z Challenge.

  1. Wow… Such a strong girl!! Good work. Our actions speaks better than words. I shouldn’t say, but I was also afraid of riding scooter till 21. Yes. I was afraid of riding it, as I fell down (minor accidents) from bike 3 times sitting on the back seat while driven by others. This made me fearful. Just last year I got the courage to drive it all alone. It was a special moment. It felt like flying.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
( I learnt riding bicycle may be at 14 or 15 I think).

  2. Awww ❤ That was an amazing memory, Neerja Di ❤ Proud of you for being strong and succeeding in your attempt! I learnt how to ride properly at the age of six. I never took the stabilisers off despite my parents ordering me, since I needed to balance myself, but I was always scared. Then, one day, I decided to give it a chance. Mum was out to the grocery store and I took of the stabilisers and rolled the cycle up to the top of the hilly road (the house in that town we lived was on a slanted street like that). Then I sat on it and … let gravity do the work. I was flying down the hill with fear and on the way saw my mother standing near the front door with two bags of groceries in her hands and a look of horror on her face 😀 I was like 'Whee! Mummy, look at me!' And that was it, I managed to veer the cycle once I reached the medium ground below 😀
God, I love your take on the challenge, it's bringing back so many memories of my own ❤

  5. Wow! This is awesome. You’re reliving your life in this challenge. I love your take on this 😉 Thankfully I know how to cycle. I fell many times though during the learning phase. My cycle was also stolen when I went to visit a friend. So, it was a good learning curve and good that I could recollect it 😀 Thanks, Neerja 😛

  6. my only regret in life was that i didn’t know how to cycle. my childhood was too busy dancing. even though i learnt to drive, not knowing how to bicycle was always a shame for me personally. and then whenever i mentioned to my friends about learning a two wheeler i was taunted that after 20+ you cannot learn two wheeler easily and its even more impossible if you dont know how to cycle. So last year when i was 27, i learnt how to ride an activa, took a video of me riding almost a kilometer and sent it to all those friends who had once made fun 🙂 And i was so proud about it. Though i still fear riding one in the traffic but still the pleasure of challenging myself to do it and succeeding at it is awesome.

    1. I know how it felt when people say that ..I just learned how to ride a scooty 😉 at 27 😛 You know people use to say you will learn it in a day 😛 but to drive it in full traffic in a metro city needs months of practice 🙂 and today I came to office riding bike in full traffic 🙂 that’s achievement 🙂 thank you sharing your story 🙂 and applause for taking up the challenge 🙂
